TransCanada Corporation is taking a gamble that Obama will not get re-elected in 2012 or that the Democrats will lose control of the Senate. TransCanada Corp. has decided to move forward with the construction of the Keystone Pipeline, starting with the southern portion of the project between Oklahoma and Texas. The pipeline will cover some 1,600 miles connecting Alberta, Canada to Port Arthur Texas. “The $13 billion Keystone pipeline system will play an important role in linking a secure and growing supply of Canadian crude oil with the largest refining markets in the United States, significantly improving North American security supply.” Source TransCanada Corp..
The gamble is a risky one because if Obama is re-elected or the Senate remains controlled by the Democrats than the project will again hit a stand-still. If the Republicans win the White House and or the Senate than it is almost certain that the entire project will get the green light. Supposedly Obama supported the idea of energy independence but being an election year and being down in the polls, he decided to play politics with our energy supply, security and jobs so he could satisfy the extreme left-wing base so as to secure those votes come November.
The environmental extremists were never going to vote Republican anyway so its safe to say Obama’s base was already secure. What’s interesting is that Democrats are starting to act like Democrats and have begun cheering the news that TranaCanada will begin construction of the pipeline. Where were the Democrats during the debate? Why were the Democrats silent when Obama decided to put politics over jobs and energy security? The answer is easy, its called re-election! Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill, who faces a tough re-election campaign in Missouri, which borders Oklahoma, said the TransCanada’s decision was “good news for American jobs, and a good step toward increasing energy production right here at home.”
“As Democrats in Congress perked up over the TransCanada announcement, Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski went to the floor of the Senate to squash any celebration. She complained that in her home state, the Trans Alaska Pipeline was only “half full” with oil because Democrats had blocked new drilling in the environmentally sensitive Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as well as some offshore drilling projects.” Source: By Richard Cowan, Reuters
Six weeks ago, when Obama shot the deal down, you could hear a pin drop on the Democratic side of the isle, now that TransCanada is moving forward without their support they are all giddy about the idea. I guess they plan on shaking down TransCanada for campaign contributions in exchange for their “luke warm” support during this re-election season?
The moral of the story is: If you’re a Democrat, and your up for re-election, you pretend to care about jobs and energy independence and act like you want the pipeline, but if you’re not up for re-election you remain committed to killing jobs, getting oil from the Middle East, letting other countries drill off our shores for oil and maybe save a tree and a few salamanders.
